Tattoos & Tequila: To Hell and Back with One of Rock's Most Notorious Frontmen, by Vince Neil Mike Sager

From Publishers Weekly

Like so many rock stars who survive into their 40s, Mötley Crüe front man Neil has produced an autobiography. Raised in Compton, Calif., just as gangs were starting to take over, Neil turned multiracial good looks and a bad attitude into a career singing for the leading hair band of the 1980s. Mötley Crüe embraced the values of rock star excess and garnered fame as much for their drunken exploits as for their music. In one grim episode, an inebriated Neil crashed his Ford Pantera into a Volkswagen, killing his passenger and critically injuring two others. Later, Neil was ejected from the band but eventually returned. Today, he lives in Vegas, making music and running several businesses, including a chain of tattoo parlors. Neil makes no pretense of being thoughtful or reflective, but with Sager's help he's done a more than adequate job of representing himself. Much is said about all the women he's had, all the drugs he's done, all the nice cars he's owned, and all the celebrities he's met. Yet within the rock-star braggadocio lies an entertaining story of a handsome, insecure guy with a lot of energy who got really lucky. Interviews with friends, business associates, and ex-wives bring much-needed depth to the narrative. To his credit, Neil deals honestly with the suffering he's caused. So the whole premise of Tatoo's and Tequilla (which I feel is a weak title) is that Vince Neil did not get enough say (I kind of disagree) in The Dirt. For those who have read the Dirt, that's literally what it is, it is pure filth. Neil Strauss is a great writer but that book he put together was just awful, maybe I wasn't supposed to like it. But we are here to talk about Vince Neil's book. After reading this book I have come to the conclusion that Vince Neil is the Donald Trump of rock and roll, though he doesn't want to admit it, he has f**K you money and proudly displays it. During this book he takes shots at his former band members that I felt was not necessary and he made a statement the night of his incident with the drummer from the band Hanoi Rocks "Razzel" that was pointless. There are also times where this book was laugh out loud hilarious, and there were some moving parts in this book with him growing up and with his late daughter, Skylar. This book is largely supplemental to "The Dirt" so if you read that book you dont necessarily have to read this book. How you enjoy this book will be based on if you like Vince Neil or not. This book is a week's read that at times will bounce around regardless of the subject of the chapter. This is the testimony of Vince Neil, enjoy!

I liked this book because it shows who Vince is, and that's what I wanted to get by reading this book. First it seemed like a bad writing, but soon I realized it's because this is transcribed from recorded interviews. Some of the Amazon customer reviews say that some of the content is redundant, but I think it's because the transcriptions weren't really edited. I assume Vince intended to be that way, like you're having a light conversation with somebody in a bar, rather than reading a history book. When people are telling a story, we tend to say the same thing over and over, right? It's a little annoying to read at first, but once I thought this may be what Vince wanted to be, I liked it because it really shows his easy-going personality. I've been Motley fan from the 80's, and I had a huge crush on Nikki Sixx. But when they fired Vince, they were so mean to him, calling him "pig" and "fat" in interview for MTV and magazines, and I started seeing ugly side of Nikki (and Tommy). I learned they were full of themselves. Since then, I was interested to hear Vince side of story plus to find out what kind of person he was, and this book is telling them quite well. Many Amazon reviews criticize his behavior and thinking process, but I think he's a generous person not to hide anything and reveal good and bad, knowing people who read this book will criticize him. I agree he's a dysfunctional rock star, but if I were in his position, I would be a dysfunctional rock star. It's just a crazy business, and they threw themselves in it in an early age. It's amazing they are still alive after the booze and sex and drug, but I'm glad Vince became a person who he is supposed to be, whom is not necessary the person I want to be friends with, but who cares? He seems happy.

I've only read a few pages but I kinda don't like what I've read so far. I think Vince Neil is the hottest man to ever walk the planet and I love Motley Crue. I listen to their music every time I get in my car. I just don't know why the book has to start off with a gross story. I hope the rest of the book doesn't de-idolize him in my opinion. I'm also reading The Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx.Update: I've read a lot more of the book and I really like it. It's very interesting to hear from Vince himself and also the sections where his family members talk about their view of Vince growing up and getting started. I still have a lot left to read and I am enjoying it.

I enjoyed the book as I’ve enjoyed all of the books of the Crüe. Knowing Vince’s background and knowing he is all about himself, left me with no surprises. It’s a good read I just wish these grown mean that so many of us love and spend our money on, would talk better about each other. There would be no Crüe without the four men that started it. Speak kindly of each other!

The writing is a bit all over the place. So takes some getting use to. However I feel (but am not sure) that Vince himself is a bit all over the place so that is fitting.I only gave it 3 stars because there is not one damn picture in the kindle version. Had I known that before, or knew how to confirm that before I would have purchased the actual book instead.Otherwise a good book

Of all the bands during the eighties there was only one that was "real", and that was Motley Crue. I say real because at any moment they could have either put out a number one record or they could have gone down in flames in drunken car crashes , overdoses , or fights that put them behind bars. And that was no act ,Motley Crue were "real deal" and they lived that life for "real". Vince Neil's book is an honest , no holds barred look at what is was like to be at the pinnacle of 1980's success in the music world and all the excesses that came along with it. Make no mistake about it , Vince got more rear end than a toilet seat , drank oceans of alchohol and snorted mountains of drugs. In this book you also get his ex wives version of events during his marriages. This guy came from nothing, from Compton and reached the heights of the music world during the eighties. Along the way he dank , snorted, crashed, smashed, fought, broke, set fire to, slept with, married, divorced and sang his way into being a legend.

Been wanting to read this for a few weeks now. I've already read The Dirt and Heroin Diaries. One thing I've learned while on my kick about musicians and bands...I have come to greatly appreciate the crap they've gone thru. And man....some have been thru more crap than others. Vince Neil being a high flyer through it..but has come out the better for it. A good read...(and another reason I'll never get married. Lol! Reinforcement of personal belief)
