Nothing makes me angrier than reading 404 pages of a book and finding out there is NO ending. This is a teaser to get you to buy the next two books. Not one of the bad reviews bothered to mention this very important detail. I do not mind spin offs of characters, but the same character being drug out for three books so beware of the term "FREE" where it means that the readers have to buy the next two. Shame on this author! Really a waste of my time.
This book doesn't end but leaves the story hanging so you buy the sequel. I always feel cheated by an author that pulls you into the story only to use your emotional connection to sell her next book. A good story should stand alone and leave the reader with a feeling of satisfaction. The end of a story is called the "conclusion" for a reason. We learned this in High School Literature 101. I won't be reading any more by this author since I don't enjoy being left hanging because of a marketing ploy.
I was very disappointed. The novel has no ending unless you buy a few more books. Trite sales trickery. True professional authors of this genre do not need to resort to lame tricks to get more sales. This gal is ranks below writers like Peggy Sue George, Diana Palmer, and Nora Roberts. Those authors give readers the whole story without the sales tricks.
I love Kristen's writing and her character development. Her use of descriptive language is lovely. However, don't get started on this series if you don't plan to buy them all, the first book didn't resolve and left me unsatisfied! I want some glimmer of a happy ending! Just on principal I am not buying the next books.
In the Rose Legacy, Kristen Heitzman introduces us to an irresistible female protagonist, Carina DiGratia. She is full of the zest of life and lives her life as honestly as she can. As the reader proceeds through this story, we develop a relationship with Carina, who faces many challenges and matures in her relationship with God. What endures the reader to Carina is her quest for forgiveness and a true acceptance of God as the guiding force. This is the major theme of this tale. Heitzman did a superb job in developing this character. She duplicated this in the development of the male protagonist, Quillan Shephard. As is expected in a romance sparks fly between the two protagonists. Each one is strong, independent and dynamic. Kristen balanced these two characters off when she pits them against Berkley Barton, the antagonist. He is everything they are not and is a master in the art of villainy.Heitzman sets this story in the 1880s in a mining community. She artfully uses vivid details in describing the country side and the town. Although, this tale is set in a fictional town, Crystal, Colorado, these descriptions makes the reader feel that they were right there. Heitzman uses this same technique, vivid details, when dealing with the different types of individuals (the supporting characters) to round out the story. Anyone who is a history buff knows that these types of towns popped up whenever gold or silver was discovered nearby. Along with these towns a myriad of people congregated. Not all have pure motives. Many were willing to capitalize on the hardship of others. Many turned to brutality for their own greed. Heitzman captures this through the supporting characters.Lastly, I really enjoyed the way Heitzman used the writing strategy of the backdrop to enhance the plot. The backstory about Wolf and Rose was well woven into the plot. Heitzman used the backdrop story to add mystery to this romance tale. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have no problem recommending it.
Christian Historical Fiction is my absolute favorite genre. I've read a couple of other Kristen Heitzmann books in the past and enjoyed them. When I stumbled upon this series in the Kindle store for a fairly cheap price I figured, why not?! I'm so happy that I found them.Overall, this book was amazing. I felt drawn into the story, as if I was there in Crystal, CO with Carina. I love books that so completely draw me into their world. It offers an escape from everyday life that, let's be honest, everybody needs at times. All of the characters were well written and developed. I have to admit I see a lot of myself in Carina: Hand-talking Italian, food lover, independent, stubborn, determined. I think we'd get along really well. Ha!There were a few slow points in the book, but for the most part I was completely engrossed. This isn't your typical, predictable romance book. I love that. I could hardly put it down.As for the reviews complaining that it's open-ended...I actually enjoy the fact that the entire series centers around the same couple. I hate when series are more focused on a location and each book is about a different couple at that location. When I get invested in a character or couple in a book or series, I always want to know what happens next. I want to live in their lives longer. In my opinion this open-ended book gives me that opportunity to stay with the characters I love.
This has been and continues to be one of my favorite books. So many of the reviews are claiming it's a bad story simply because it's apart of a trilogy, really?? If you prefer stand alones, I suppose this one isn't for you. But if you've ever gotten to the end of a book and wished you could live in the character's world a little longer, then guess what? There are two more books after this one to enjoy Carina and Quillan. Kristen Heitzmann writes mostly suspense, but in this historical romance, she brings those suspense skills to the table and weaves a story that will catch you hook, line and sinker. Sucked into the story. Desperate to read the next book. Yes, it does have a cliff hanger ending. So you might as well prepare yourself for an investment. But I promise you, it is so worth it. When you finally get to the third book, you'll understand why I love it so much. The Rose Legacy is a fantastic start to what is an amazing series with great character development, world building, tension and history.
