I don't know what all these people are complaining about, regarding the "fuzzy" pictures or graphics. Every picture or graphic in MY book is crystal clear and sharp.That being said...I like the book, easy to understand, and I'm learning a lot, however...most of the book involves Windows 7! That operating system came out in 2009, which is 7 years ago at this writing. This book contains exercises, and also comes with a lab manual that requires you to perform a variety of tasks on a Windows 7 computer! At my school the entire computer lab is mostly Windows 8 or 10! In order to perform the labs, we had to find a bunch of unused desktops and spend all day installing Windows 7 on them! Hey Jean, your publisher wants us students to pay $120 for your book...how about updating it to an operating system people use these days?Also, the lab book that goes with this (purchased separately) covers installing Windows XP & Vista! Some of the Microsoft links the book asks you to visit (compatability check, etc) are broken links and no longer exist. Like I said, it needs a serious update.Other than all that, I do like the book, it is very useful and I'm learning a lot about computer hardware. I'm slogging through the Windows 7 nonsense in order to pass the class, but the other info is good.I attached a few pictures of the graphics and photos from the book, in response to all the people saying they are low quality.
For a couple decades, I put off learning what I found in the course that used this textbook. I was always worried how long it would take me to learn all that computer jargon, all those parts, all those software procedures. This text is remarkably clear. Normally I do much better in a classroom environment, but even with the class being taught online, I was able to learn thoroughly, nearly all because of this textbook. After the course, I followed the instructor's suggestion to buy an electronic edition, which as a searchable document, is an excellent reference.
The book is fine, it came as it was suppose to. It is it the title of the book listed on the page that is confusing and miss lead me to think that the printed access card is the one for the LabConnection, 2 terms (12 months) Printed access card.v ISBN-13: 978-1133703754 but it isn't, it is for the Comptia A+ practice test on certblaster.com which has no school terms associated with it. VERY MISLEADING!!!
The textbook is written well, and is also well organized. The book is assumes the reader is a beginner. Do not get the Kindle version of the books if you want to be able to see pictures clearly. Most of the pictures on the Kindle book version are blurred. The graphics are an important part of the book lesson learning tool. I had to buy the hardback copy just to be able to see the graphics in the book. I hope this helps some
Excellent book, although the author does have a tendency to repeat herself. I would say one of it's strengths is it really facilitated learning. It provides great step by step guides for things like installing a processor next to pictures and diagrams to explain the parts. Also it seems like it would be great as a reference book or even a how-to book.As a study guide for the COMPTIA test though, I don't think it is all that great, maybe 3 stars, mainly because it is somewhat disorganized as a text, and also b/c of the redundancy,which I think other people have mentioned. For example, some topics, like file system formats, are explained in several different chapters, and the explanations given are the basically the same. The info is all very accurate and easy to understand, but for pure test-study prep, I would recommend a more condensed text, with maybe this as backup.
Even though I'm familiar with computer hardware and software I found the A+ very helpful. It is written clearly and organized in a very good manner. The chapters cover each subject concisely and fully. One small complaint is that the minute you publish the book the book is behind the technology available. I don't think any publisher could keep up unless the book was on-line and there you could make changes faster. Use the book to review for your A+ tests or if you are just beginning work through the whole thing to understand PC maintenance. I think if you are going to buy yourself one book to help you make sense of present day computer systems this is the book to have.
Bought two new versions of this book, or so I thought (and paid for). One looks new, the other obviously isn't with its two used stickers on the spine and two rental stickers--one on the spine and one on the back. I don't like paying for new and getting used. I will be letting Amazon customer service know about this. Not happy!!!
Went to Harford Technical Highschool for Computer and Networking(basic-complex computer/router information) diploma and this helped me for my college class which was PC Repair Level 1&2....got to study for the A+ Exam which is 196 questions(not sure). But this will really help..
