I hesitated to buy this book because I have so many books on writing for children. Now that I am attempting to write a picture book I decided to get it and am so glad that I did. If ever I publish my book I will owe it to this book.

This revered guide for picture book writers is nicely updated and as helpful as always. My old copy was dog-eared as I went from someone studying the craft to someone published—and still studying the craft! I appreciate the way Ann shares her wisdom with us. Whether you’re starting your journey with writing, or a seasoned pro, this is a great guide!

In the middle each chapter gives you a different aspect of the book to consider and work on – from structure and prose style to naming characters and an accommodating the split audience of child and parent.The book is designed for a person with a draft manuscript or at least a well-developed idea and leans towards preparing for trade publication although self-publishing is also discussed. Depending on the readers background some topics might be reasonable familiar and others completely new, but all are contextualized with practical advice for creating a successful picture book manuscript.I found this book extremely helpful for helping me begin to critically review and imprive my story and anticipate referring to it often.Review copy courtesy of NetGalley.
