If you're looking at this product, it's probably because it's a required text for a college course and this review does not matter. You are going to buy it regardless. Still, I will offer some insight. This book is similar in many ways to other ethics textbooks and presents basically an introduction to ethics with a criminal justice slant. I used this in a graduate course and actually ENJOYED the textbook, especially the introductions with real-life examples of ethically dilemmas and the various scenarios scattered throughout the book.
This book is very thorough about the ethical and moral considerations and decision making processes involved in criminal justice. It has a thorough index; however, if you are reading it as text for a testable class, I recommend indexing the book yourself as you read. I index mine and include all bolded words, all sources, all names, institutions, cases, all lists, and diagrams etc. This is especially helpful in an open book testing environment. I have yet to make below a 95 on a test because of my index, even when unable to fully read the chapter. Once you have the index, you can print it out or, if you can use it in electronic copy, use ctrl+f to search for keywords. I'm 75% through the book and have only had to use the actual index 2-3 times. It does include a traditional index, names index, and case index.
I bought this as supplemental reading for a criminal justice class and I absolutely loved it! I love this way this author writes and in comparison to the required text, it went a lot further into detail on certain things. More laid back writing style, but a lot of emphasis on theories. I still love the subheading for one of the sections "First, let's kill all the lawyers!" With that one line, I started laughing and my affection for this book was sealed. Obviously, I don't believe that...and neither does the author. The author was just playing off of the general consensus of the US's view on attorneys.
Required reading for my Criminal Justice Ethics course. A good resource, but I don't love the format with the little side boxes, and it's very small print for those of us who aren't 18 any more!
Excellent text for the class I was taking. Pollock's views and cites of other prominent Law Enforcement and research sources are outstanding. I got a lot from this book combined with the Criminal Justice Ethics class. Even if this is not the text for your ethics class or you just need it to re-energize yourself in your career, I would recommend it.
