As any reader of mysteries and police procedurals knows, most murderers are somehow connected to the victim. The hardest killings to solve are when the killer and victim are strangers. DCI Jones begins to wonder if these killings aren’t going to be that type.Early in the tale, Jones suspects Richard Cameron, a recently released rapist who fears to be accused and imprisonment. Cameron’s son defends his father when he is taken in for questioning. However, no physical evidence exists to entrap Cameron. A third killing finds Cameron’s DNA evidence, even as it was never found in the early killings for which Cameron serviced 18 years. However, when the third body is found, DNA evidence says Cameron is the killer. As more killings of young blond women occur, Cameron disappears. But, the killings do not.I enjoyed Paul Gitsham’s second DCI Warren Jones book. As an author, this biologist-turned-science teacher, is concerned not only with solving cases but developing well rounded characters whose humanity sparkles and shows the depth of personal tragedies such as the death of his grandmother. Although die-hardened mystery fan will note all the cues, those of us less worthy are caught by the new information revealed and the rage of the murderer. DO NOT SKIP the subtle clues. Careful reading will not surprise you; however the ending will.

I would probably give this 4.5 stars if I could. I really enjoyed the book and was drawn into DCI Jonses' life and family. His wife Susan is almost too good to be true but she does seem to have a career of her own that at least partially justifies the lack of harping on the DCI about running out of family obligations and holidays. Susan and Warren seem to have a strong marriage, something often lacking in these police procedurals. I am about to read the first book in this series (out of order). I hope that the author continues this series. He has made a atrong start!

Thank you! At last a DCI without the baggage of a drinking problem, a dead partner, a dead child, or multiple failed marriages. That alone made the book enjoyable. The plot was fine but possibly a bit too obvious. Although the author did add just enough 'doubt' to keep me guessing for awhile. Yes, I recommend the book.

This is a very well written and plotted novel. The suspense starts out immediately and continues throughout the book. This book was better than the first book. Mr. Gitsham is improving his writing skills. I truly enjoyed this book and appreciated how well DCI Jones' team got along with one another. For that is not always the case in these police procedurals. I am looking forward to reading the next novel in this series.

The Author's note at the end of this book says - 'Phew! the dreaded second novel is finished.' He should not worry so much! This is an excellent second outing for DCI Jones - the Coventry kid. It is complex since it includes scenes from Jones' family life. as a result characterisations are superb. it also has a strong sense of place - even though Middlesbury is fictional. Descriptions of Coventry are so accurate the author must have lived there. All in all a well rounded procedural for adults. I look forward to the next one.

A police procedural that takes you through all the lines of investigation the police have to follow before honing in on the suspect. Interesting personal life for Warren too.

Mr Gitsham's DCI Warren novels are fast paced, fully developed stories that pull the reader in and when the novel has finished, one is left wanting to know more about what happens next with the protagonist as well as looking forward to a new episode in this great detective fiction. Cannot wait until the 3rd book in the series is out!

The Warren Jones series tend to be a bit drawn out ,but stick it out to the end.
