I have a several different editions of this series of The Easy XXX Fake Book. All are quite similar in their features ... This one has a good cross-section of popular/rock songs from the 1990s. The format features slightly simplified arrangements all revised to the key of "C"... The arrangements, being simplified correspond to the "easy" level of piano music. The pros is that this format extends the number of musicians (and student-musicians) that might be able to take on these tunes. I know from long experience that studying "the classics" may create a first rate musician --- eventually. But the "cost" of that education may be boredom and frustration -- along with not being able to play familiar songs. The primary disadvantage of all songs being written in C is that it puts some music at too high or too low a register to properly associate itself with the source music. My suggestion is that some judgment be made to select the Keys of G and/or F as alternatives to C for songs that get too far away from the original. (This is actually done in Hal Leonaard's "EZ-Play Today" series of song books. Those books are published with no key signature as part of the notation, but simply makes the appropriate keys "accidentals.")Another positive, as compared to traditional "fake books" is that the music is of a reasonable size for reading (especially with my very imperfect eyesight). Typical Fake books were manufactured by stripping the "voice" notation from a song, and then pasting it together to make up the song book. The downside of that system is (1) the notation was often reduced in size to fit more material into the book, and (2) that ignores some of the "instrumental" segments in the "accompaniment" notation.4 instead of 5 stars, mostly for the specific selection -- there are songs that didn't get in and a few that probably should have been left out. I understand that getting "rights" to publish some songs can be difficult and may play a role in the selection process.

Not only this book, but the entire series of these books. If you are a keybord player you can change all the keys by using the the key changer for singing in your or someone's key range. All the songs in all the books are all in the key of C. This makes it easy to read and play all the music. If you feel a different cord skins better in a measure then write it it. There is lots of space to write thins in. This is awesome for the AARP people because it is easy to read.

i wish the songs weren't all transposed to the key of c....some songs just sound better in the key they were written in.

Love this book! Can't wait to work through it! I do wish is was spiral or comb bound.

I like this book, but not as much as I enjoyed the 60s, 70s and 80s versions, mostly because I am not as familiar with these songs. The book itself is just like the other versions. It is very easy to play and sing along right away because of the simple right hand and guitar chords. If you love the 90s, you'll love this book.

Nicely laid out, great collection of songs. Keep in mind that this an "EASY" fake book. That means that many of the songs' chords have been dramatically simplified. Black Hole Sun, as written in this book, sounds terrible. HAHA. But many of the songs are still spot on, and this book is still a lot of fun.

Read the description more carefully than I did. These songs are ALL in C - REGARDLESS OF THE KEY OF THE ORIGINAL. Why bother? I could play these songs wrong without a book to tell me how.

A wonderful book for generation x-ers and anyone else who knows these songs. Perfect for beginning pianists who are just learning chords and chord symbols.
