Review
With this third edition of Parenting Your Parents: Straight Talk about Aging in the Family the authors, Bart Mindszenthy and Dr. Michael Gordon, have added a new level of insight and sensitivity to the issues encountered by families as they try to unravel the various problems that they will inevitably face as their parents age and gradually decline. (Caledon Spectrum)These Family Case Studies provide a compelling context in which to absorb the authors’ practical advice about addressing – as a family – issues like stroke, surgery, independence, dementia, and end of life decisions with patience, tact, and reason. (WhaleyEstateLitigation.com)[The] authors write eloquently and compassionately about each case study, weighing in on treatment plans and on which family members are behaving suitably under the circumstances. Mindszenthy's chapter on his mother's dementia and the personal anguish it caused his family is a cry from the heart that sends the ultimate message of the book with great clarity: 'It's a portion of life none of us is prepared to – or wants to – face. However, it's there, and for each of us, it's there in a different way and form.' (Publisher's Weekly (US))

It was a very helpful book for me when my mother lived with me.
I appreciate the good content in this book, but it is frustrating to read as there is no table of contents. The Vulnerability Index looks like it would be very helpful, but it is in such tiny print that I can't read it, and I can't make the font bigger. I am currently trying to figure out how to print it.If Amazon fixes these problems I'd be happy to review the book on its content. Until then, my suggestion is to get the print copy.
The book was very helpful to my wife as she tries to care for her parents. She would recommend it for anyone dealing with the challenges of caring for aging parents.
I enjoyed this book as it is so practical. If relates real life case histories which are down-to-earth. These are true and so easy to relate to. Actually, there is an outstanding Table of Contents, clearly outlined in the print version, noting a previous review comment. I found that the Geriatrician's point of view presented after each case study was so practical. One can tell that Dr. Gordon does have extensive experience in geriatrics, as one of the pioneers in this field in North America. The reader will be able to identify with some of the topics presented such as travel for the elderly, culture clash, who is the rightful decision-maker, sexuality late in life, dealing with dementia in the family,This is not a formal academic publication, but is a practical every day guide for all family members who are blessed to have living mature parents. There are challenges when parents could lay on the guilt trip, when there may be value gaps between generations, and a chapter on when love and the law collide. Good advice is provided in coping with the stress of the aging parent, in communication with the social worker, and in directing caring children to resource use in the community. At the end of the day, we want the best for our parents. This guide on straight talk about aging in the family may help us achieve that end, perhaps understand what and why we are making decisions, while providing useful information on conditions which are common and characteristic in the elderly. This book is easy to read, and helpful.Dr. Arthur Dodek
I borrowed this book just after returning from a trip to visit my mother, and found a wealth of resources in the back chapters. While showing us that others fall into the same human traps laid by emotion, different viewpoints, etc., each story in the front chapters provides insight as to how these many no-doubt common situations could ideally be handled, and how we can avoid much heartbreak and help our loved ones best with by taking simply laid-out steps before a developing situation becomes a crisis. Please, read this book before you're worried or fretting about "what to do about mom".
